Wedding Tax Write-Offs?

Yes, you hear right! Not only are these great write-offs but most of these are for a good cause!

Weddings are expensive, so it is too bad that they aren’t tax deductible. But wait – though tax write-offs may not be top-of-mind when you are planning your wedding, with careful planning there are some ways you can garner a tax deduction or two. Here are some ideas according to the Turbo tax blog:

1. The church. If you are paying a ceremony fee, it may be tax deductible. If not, ask whether the church waives ceremony fees for members who donate at a certain level. It may be worth upping your donations for the year to get a triple benefit: a fee waiver, a tax write off, and a warm glow from donating to a good cause.

2. The venue. If you are having your reception or getting married at a historical garden, museum or homestead, or even a state or national park, the fee you pay may be deductible as a donation. Check with the site for more details.

3. Flowers and food. Once your wedding is over, have a friend take the leftover food and flowers to a homeless shelter, women’s center or similar non-profit organization. Not only will you have done a good deed, with a receipt, you’ll be able to take a deduction for the value of the items donated.

4. The gown. Donate your wedding gown to a non-profit organization such as Making Memories or the I Do Foundation, and you’ll help others enjoy their special day in style. The same goes for flower girl and bridesmaid dresses, as well as candles and other decorations that won’t spoil.

5. Wedding favors. Instead of soon-forgotten trinkets, make a donation to a charity on behalf of everyone in your wedding and your guests, and you’ll be helping others while garnering yourself a tax deduction. You might even let your wedding party choose the charities they treasure.

6. Gift registry. Create a wedding gift registry through the IDoFoundation.org and up to 10% of gift purchases will be donated to your favorite charity. You can harvest charitable rebates with wedding purchases through the foundation, and even create a charity registry where guests can donate to commemorate your special day.

Real Wedding: Lori + Donovan

This gorgeous wedding was submitted by a fabulous bride who was all about DIY and she sure knew how to work it!

Here is what Lori has to say:

We actually grew up together, attending the same elementary school, he and his twin sister were a year below me. Myy memories of him then were really just being a pest. I moved during middle school, and we never crossed paths again until he saw me years later after he saw me through a picture with a mutual friend. He reached out me to reconnect and we have been inseperable ever sence. Four years later, on 10-17-10, we made it official and had the most amazing DIY wedding. HE actually picked the hot pink and black colors, and thankfully it was even toned down some from what he wanted. We wanted a more celebration than a traditional wedding and we had just that, it was beautiful and all the hard work paid off! There were so many untraditional aspects that made this wedding totally unique. To begin with, I have such amazing girlfriends that I ended up with 11 Bridesmaids, and he had 7 Groomsmen. The mismatch was no match for us, as we created a unique entrance for them all. Each bridesmaid had their own style of black dress with matching pink flower fascinators while the groomsmen all in their tuxes and converse. My flower girls wore DIY Pink tutus, with bling twinkle toed converse, and they were the most adorable girls I have ever seen! Rather than a customary unity service, we had a unity cross, which was truly special for us! My husband and the pastor who are both Jamaican, entered to Bob Marley's "One Love" and we exited to "I'm a Believer" by the Monkeys. I had an amazing candy buffet, with DIY candy wrappers and candy bags, and other yummy treats which were left completely empty after the reception, it was a total hit! We departed with bubbles into a beautiful white Hummer. The entire day was all our style and was a perfect memorable day! I was a total "DIY bride" and had designed everything beginning with my bridesmaid cards, then onto the save the dates, invitations, programs, photo share cards, children's activity books, candy wrappers, boudior book, sign-in book, 11 bridesmaid flower bouquets, my bouquet, flower girl tutu's, blinged converse for the flower girls, flower girl baskets, ring bearer pillow, garter, card box, mothers' corsages, bridal hangers as well as hangers for all the bridesmaids, personalized painted wine glasses, etched beer mugs for the groomsmen, and im sure i missed something... but you name it, I handled it! It was the most amazing day ever!

I loved doing some of the DIY projects so much, that I have since started an Etsy business for my personalized bridal hangers and the children's wedding activity books.

I would visit you site and immediately look for the pictures. I'm not much of a reader until I see an image that catches my eye and then the story will be of interest. There seemed to be something that would always catch my eye, especially my favorite, the confetti cake pops! I was determined to have the cake pops after seeing the confetti ones, and although I wasn't able to get them with confetti, it was the little details that I appreciated finding!

Costco may be able to help you. Designer Kirstie Kelly has joined a partnership with Costco to create a signature line of couture bridal gowns. They will be sold at in-store pop-up salons and women will be allowed to try on gowns with bridal experts at hand. Kelly has designed a total of six gowns for the Costcouture line-- the price ranges anywhere from $699 to $1,399, 40% off retail price, and are available in sizes 2 through 24.

Appointments are strongly recommended. Mark you calendar and plan accordingly. They will be in San Bernardino this upcoming weekend, March 10-13; in Los Feliz, March 17-20; and in Van Nuys, March 24-27.

If you want to enjoy your wedding day, start by planning a wedding that accurately reflects who you are. If you are a shy person who despises lengthy and elaborate social events, don't plan an enormous wedding with pomp and splendor. If the thought of a quiet riverside wedding with close friends and family makes your skirt fly up, by all means, plan that wedding. A bride who is forced to plan a wedding she does not want is setting herself up for misery.
Stay Organized
The journey to that wedding day can be more complicated for some than others, but for all, staying organized is a key element in enjoying every moment of the journey. The modern bride has access to lots of free wedding planning resources that are designed to make organization a breeze. Keep track of appointments, meet deadlines, stay on budget, and have access to important phone numbers by using free resources such as those found on TheKnot.com. This site even has an app that can be download to your smartphone or iPad for instant access while on the go. Use these resources to spread out deadlines, and never ever allow yourself to procrastinate.
Establish a Budget
No one likes to discuss it, but money is a huge factor in every wedding. Establish a budget early on. And make sure that there is clear communication about who is paying for what. If you want to avoid stressful and awkward situations leading up to and on your wedding day, you must know who is paying for what, and you must stick to your budget plan. Ask for Help

Who loves to speak publicly? Not many...especially if you have to give a speech and you're the Best Man or the Maid of Honor. We found this Best Man speech generator on FireFly Group Events and though it was pretty much the best thing ever!

Many of you might know 100 layer Cake already as it one of the top blogs around. They have newly redesigned their site and they've added a MarketPlace.

It's a pretty fabulous idea! You post what type of vendor and how much you have budgeted for them. Then vendors come in and check it out and if they fit within your needs, they place a bid! Not only is it a fab way to look for your vendors but if you have last minute vendors you're looking for, this is definitely the place to do it!

Last Minute Tip: Extra Guests

So we all know a couple of people out there who as much as you ask for their RSVP, they just won't mail it back even though it's been pre-postaged for them and all they need to do is to CHECK the yes or no!

Choosing the right Ring

There is nothing wrong with knowing what kind of ring you want and letting him know it. I'll be the first to admit that I gave my now-husband pictures of the rings I liked.

Why? One of my biggest fears was that he would buy me a ring that I would not be happy with. Shallow? Maybe. But...hey! A diamond IS forever! And it was more about style, not size, so shallow I am not!

Thankfully, he was super appreciative that I did this. He was able to get me something he knew I would love, and in turn I got the ring that I wanted! It was a "win-win."

Wedding Videography: The Last Minute Dilemma {S}

This week we have a guest post from Mike Fisher of Storymix Media. Many couples today may forego hiring a videographer for their wedding in order to save some money. Check out Mike’s great advice about the importance of video and alternatives to traditional videography that won’t break your budget. We are especially enamored with the Flip Wedding. A custom wedding video for $200, what a great deal!

Wedding Video has become the great divide. Many couples consider it an essential part of the planning while others consider it a waste of time and money. Since you are reading this on the Last Minute Bride, you probably haven't decided what to do regarding video or have decided against it. We recommend hiring a pro if possible, but if it's not in the cards, do not despair, there is still time to avoid what will certainly be a regret in your future.

You don't get a do-overs.

If you decide against having video, the decision is final. We didn't get video and I can tell from painful experience how much I wish I had that footage. It was the last event my grandmother was healthy enough to attend before she passed. You might not think you'll care, but a few years down the road when you have kids or are celebrating your anniversary you'll wish you had it.

The day will be a blur.

Even though your wedding day may seem like it will be the longest of your life, it will be over in a flash. Many couples feel as if they don't remember anything that happened, even the day after the wedding! Plus, there are so many things happening during the day that you are bound to to miss much of it as you'll be focused on specific events.

Photos aren't video.

Many couples think that having good photos will be enough to capture the memories. While photography is very important and may be your favorite method of remembering your wedding, still photos cannot recreate the sounds, visuals, and emotions of video. A photo won’t capture the crack in your fiance’s voice while he got teary eyed saying his vows. And a video of your grandmother dancing to YMCA will be much more enjoyable, since there's a good chance you were talking with table 15 or at the bar when it happened.

Alternatives to a pro.

Some couples just can't afford to hire a pro or don’t not want to deal with yet another vendor. At a minimum ask an acquaintance (friends and family prefer to enjoy the day) to shoot some video. You'll at least have the footage and can have it edited later by a company like Storymix Media or do it yourself at home. Another option is to rent Flip cameras and give them to your bridal party, friends, and family to capture the intimate and personal moments. In fact, this is a great idea even if you hire a pro - Flip cameras are a great way to get your guests involved and capture some footage the videographer may miss while he’s focused on the bride and groom.

Last MinuteTip!

There are a couple things you can do to your stress levels down on your big day. These are the ones I definitely reccommend!

Get enough sleep! If you're having an evening wedding, feel free to have your bachelor/ette the night before but make sure you don't drink too much unless you have a a hangover cure. If you're having an early wedding, go to sleep early! Trust me, enough sleep will make you feel more calm & happy!
Eat! Have some food or just a Luna bar but eat something! Keep this a secret but one of my bridesmaids fainted while we were exchanging our vows. It didn't ruin anything at all but she was so embarrassed! She hadn't eaten all day and completely collapsed!
Hydrate! You just have to!
Have a glass of champagne! BUT not on an empty stomach!
Surround yourself with the people you love! They will know what to say and they will make you feel at ease because you'll be:
Laughing!
REMEMBER WHAT THIS DAY IS ABOUT! You marrying the love of your life and starting a life together!

There are other tips like stretching and breathing and they can be helpful but the the ones I chose are the basics to help your day go smooth!

Built in 1885, meet McCharles House, located in Old Town Tustin. For the last 25 years, mother and daughter team Audrey and Vivian have preserved and opened this home for special events. Wendy and Stacey stumbled upon this gem on a recent walk around town, and Ms. Vivian was SO kind to give us a VIP tour of this amazing home.

Wherever shall we begin? For starters, the garden in the front of the home! Take advantage of the luscious green background that surrounds the home. And how gorgeous are the colors? Green and brown with purple trim!

Moving indoors, we couldn't hide our enthusiasm at the beauty surrounding us! From the original hardwood floors to the decor, we are in love!

This is just from standing in the entrance of the home. Imagine having your engagement dinner at the gorgeous dining table? Well aren't you happy...because you can! McCharles House is available for private events, including engagement photo shoots and dinners, wedding pictures, weddings and receptions!
